Q: What level of experience do I need to possess to learn this art? 

A: Previous experience is not a necessity, as we all begin somewhere. If, however, you have experience in other styles you will find Pencak Silat a constantly challenging and stimulating art. We find illustrating the practices learned through other arts through the lens of silat principles yields new, exciting, and synergistic insights. 

Q: Will I fit in with the martial arts crowd?

A: You are treated as an equal without regard to gender, age, race, orientation, sash rank, or physical condition. We foster a supportive environment where each person is treated with respect; humility is encouraged and egotism is discouraged. This is part of learning to embody the attributes of chivalry.

Q: What level of commitment do I need to make?

A: This is a personal consideration. Students train because they want the challenge, not because they have signed a contract. If you are ready to work, then we welcome you into this circle of friends. That being said, we recommend an initial three-month minimum so that you have time to get a feel for how class runs and your comfort level with the teachers and participants. 

Q: Do I have to worry about getting hurt? 

A: Safety is a prime consideration in our training and we do everything possible to enhance awareness and prevent accidents or injuries. 

Q: Will I be able to keep up? 

A: Training is intensive yet lighthearted and you are encouraged to discover your talents at your own pace. 

Q: Will I get in shape with this training?

A: We have a comprehensive fitness regimen designed to help you reach peak condition as quickly as possible. as well as recommendations for training as part of your daily practice. 

Q: Is training in weapons a part of the curriculum?

A: The curriculum provides in-depth training in the use of knife, shortsword/stick, tekpi (iron truncheon), staff, and flexible weapons. A student can also elect to study the exotic weapons keris and kujang.  

Q: What is the emphasis upon rank advancement?

A: Although there is a sash system which demands the memorization of the core fundamentals, you will find that more emphasis is placed upon responsiveness under duress and the ability to defend yourself than on memorization of techniques.
